I’m Rick Nugent, Deputy Commissioner, Regional Operations, Victoria Police, and I am proud to be the President of the Victoria Police Games Federation (VPGF).
We all know the benefits of an active lifestyle and the positive impact it can have on our physical and mental health and wellbeing. Finding time for family, friends, sport or exercise is a challenge we all face, but it is particularly important for those working in the emergency management sector. The Victoria Police and Emergency Services Games are about more than competition - they are an opportunity for us to come together, prioritise our own physical and mental health, and invest in the friendships that characterise the spirit of the Games.
2020 will no doubt go down in the record books as one of the more challenging periods emergency services personnel have had to deal with. From bushfires early in the year to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, it has been a year that has tested us all. As a result of COVID-19, the VPGF Executive made the decision to initially postpone the Victoria Police & Emergency Services Games just four days before they were due to commence and ultimately cancel the Games in early April. The decision to cancel the Games was difficult but necessary because the health and wellbeing of all our agencies was our utmost priority.
Before we had to cancel the Games, the 2020 launch was held at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park and was hosted by Channel 10 sports reporter Nick Butler. During the launch, I was pleased to make two special presentations for the 2019 Games, being:
- Inter-Services Trophy; Awarded to Corrections Victoria
- Chief Commissioner’s Trophy; Awarded to Transit and Public Safety Command
The 2020 Games were also looking to be another great success with more than 3000 participants from 30 different agencies. Soccer 7s, netball, basketball and lawn bowls were once again some of the most popular events.
I am very much looking forward to the 2021 Games as we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Victoria Police Games Federation, and 40 years since the Games began in 1981. The Games have come along way over the past 40 years and by hosting the Games in Geelong in a condensed fashion, we are hoping to bring together our agencies and members to celebrate this special occasion together. Planning for these Games has continued throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and our members can be assured that all events will be carried out in a COVID-safe manner and we will continue to monitor the situation right up until the commencement of the Games.
We have already received fantastic support for the 2021 Games. We welcome the City of Greater Geelong and Emergency Management Victoria as our major partners, ESSSuper as a Gold Sponsor, while our loyal sponsors of APS Benefits, Transurban and BankVic are continuing their valued partnerships for the 2021 Games. Our partnership with the web developers, FUSESport continues with their generous support for our online registration portal and development of the Games website. Their contribution is vital and will ensure that up-to-date information is available for all events and activities throughout the five days of competition.
We are extremely grateful for the sustained support of all of our sponsors and I thank them for their investment and support of the 2021 Games.
To our participating agency CEOs, senior executives and leaders, thank you for continuing to champion your employees to prioritise their health and wellbeing by taking part in the Games.
Finally, the Games are significant because of the diverse range of competitors coming together from our participating agencies. I encourage everyone to get involved and be part of the fun at the 2021 Games. Let’s all start preparing for the 2021 Games now to make them a resounding success simply by joining with a friend, forming a team, making a commitment to compete yourself, encouraging others to participate or volunteering
at the Games.
It might just be you or your team standing proudly on the podium at the end of the 2021 Games!
