The spectacular launch; the introduction of a risk management policy, and the
later starting date of the 2008 Games, resulted in the highest number of
competitors in the past 10 years.
Consistent and substantial support from Emergency Services agencies has also
assisted to ensure that we run the most successful events. It has helped us to
obtain the best venues, officials and First-Aid kits available for our Sports
Co-ordinators to conduct safe and enjoyable events.
Over the years the introduction of new sporting/recreational events to cater
for a large and growing range of interests and abilities has been central to
achieving the goal of increasing participation. In 2009 the new event of X-Box
Racing will be introduced and conducted by Parks Victoria. It will involve a
series of console games that have become very popular throughout the world - I
wish the new Sports Co-ordinators every success with this new event.
Preparation for the 2009 Games includes the checking of each venue well in
advance to ensure that they are 'fit for purpose'. This involves each Sports
Co-ordinator completing a 'Facility Safety Checklist' to enable them enough
time to change a venue if deemed necessary under the Federation's risk
management policy guidelines. I can assure you that every effort is made to
ensure a safe environment for competitors, so that they can have the most
positive and fulfilling experience.
Team sports like netball and indoor cricket continue to attract the largest
number of participants. In order to process team entries for the 2009 Games in
the most efficient manner, the Games Office has introduced a system where teams
cannot be registered or entered without full payment. This has been designed to
allow as much lead in time as possible for the respective Sports Co-ordinators
to create schedules that cater for an increasing number of teams.
I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate Vic Roads Transport Safety
Services for winning the 'Inter Services Trophy' for the third consecutive year
- a mighty effort. I note however, that the Metropolitan Ambulance Service and
Rural Ambulance Victoria have combined to form 'Ambulance Victoria' which may
prove to be a formidable opponent in the inter-agency stakes. I also
acknowledge that Corrections Victoria has made steady improvement over the past
five years and are currently in fourth place. This certainly makes for an
interesting and exciting 2009 Games.
The benefits are many including the opportunity to connect with like minded
people - I encourage you all to take part and enjoy the 2009 Victoria Police
and Emergency Services Games.

Assistant Commissioner
